Unit Clerk & Medical Office Administration

Program Duration: 780 Total Hrs.: Theory 580 Hrs; Internship (Co-op Work Experience) 200 Hrs.
The Unit Clerk and Medical Office Administrator program is designed to provide students with the business, technology and communications skills required to fulfill a fundamental role in a number of healthcare environments. The Unit Clerk and Medical Office Administrator program prepares students to work with health care-related software and applications used to schedule patient appointments, prepare reports, invoices, financial statements and medical records. Students will learn to complete insurance forms, submit billing to Alberta Health Services, process payments, interview patients, complete intake forms and a number of other administrative duties.
1. Minimum age requirement of 18 years or older.
2. High School Diploma or equivalent, or
3. High School Diploma equivalent will be from other provinces in Canada, or
4. Successful completion of the Evergreen College Admission Test (Wonderlic Test) minimum score required (310) on verbal skills exam, or
5. A Canadian Language Bench mark 5 or equivalent (TOFEL, IELTS)
6. Successful entrance interview with Evergreen College Administration
7. High school diploma will be verified by diploma and/or transcripts.

Graduates of this Medical Office Administration program may expect to find employment in a variety of settings including private medical clinics; Community Health Units; hospital departments such as Admissions, Out-Patient Clinics, Emergency, Radiology, or as a Unitclerk or surgical Booking clerk, Dental Offices nursing homes, palliative care facilities, or senior citizens’ residences; medical transcription departments / facilities; private veterinary clinics; medical specialty offices; midwifery clinics; medical supply companies; Chiropractic or Physiotherapy clinics; and insurance companies dealing with private medical insurance.

This Course will provide the students 200 hours’ practical experience in the real-world business. This course has 3 objectives: 1) Demonstration of student’s professionalism reflected by attendance, reliability, self-awareness, respect, and commitment to client centered service. 2) Opportunity for student to use their new technical skills; observe and integrate into office culture; work on soft skills/communication skills; network with industry colleagues; gain reference(s); add experience to their resume; possibly gain extended employment or referral; and receive evaluation from Employer. Open communication is maintained throughout the work term between Learners, Hosts and Student) Understanding the importance of proper documentation of professional work.
