Program Overview
The Personal Support Worker CERTIFICATE Program is approved as a vocational program under the Private Career Colleges Act, and meets the standards of the National Association of Career Colleges. The Personal Support Worker (PSW) replaces the former Health Care Aide, Home Support Worker levels I, II, and III; Personal Attendant, and Respite Worker. In facilities, PSWs assist nurses and other members of the health care team in the basic care of residents and patients, primarily assisting with and providing personal care and other activities of daily living, towards maintaining the individual’s maximum potential for independence and self-direction. PSWs participate in rehabilitation and restorative care, and in the care of the dying. In private homes, PSWs provide on-going or short term support services for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence, or family disruption. In addition to personal care, PSWs may carry out housekeeping and other home management duties.

Admission Requirement
An Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent**; or
be at least 18 years of age or older and pass an entry test
All students must pass a Technical Literacy Exam

Career Opportunity
Personal Support Workers are employed in health care facilities; long term care facilities, retirement homes; group homes and hospice centres; by day care and day away programs, and in private homes by home care visiting agencies and private individuals.
